Pakistan has reaffirmed its commitment to the Afghan peace process, emphasising its desire for the early resumption of the stalled peace talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban. Adviser on Foreign Affairs Sartaj Aziz, during a meeting with the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative Nicholas Haysom, has tried to argue Pakistan’s neutral role in Afghanistan. Pakistan claims that it supports peace talks between the Taliban and the Afghan government and it is ready to play its role for the establishment of peace in Afghanistan. The commitment shown by Pakistan is commendable but in practice the government lacks a clear policy on the Afghan issue. Unless those who have the power to influence a deal come forward, no lasting peace is possible in Afghanistan.
