The global strategic environment has undergone tremendous changes. Advancements in the field of technology have both aided and accelerated military modernization. One of the major technological breakthroughs has been the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI), which has brought transformative changes in various industries such as medicine, healthcare, IT, etc. However, the use of AI is not only restricted to the civilian domain, but its visualization is apparent in the military domain as well. In order to strengthen their military capabilities and gain a strategic advantage, countries are investing more in emerging technologies. Artificial intelligence technology has widely improved, mainly with the help of vast data, machine learning developments, and advanced computing power.
The military application of Artificial Intelligence can broadly be divided into two main categories: i) autonomous robotic devices and ii) stationary applications.[1] Robotic applications encompass the fully or partially autonomous military systems equipped with advanced decision-making capabilities, navigation, and sensory capabilities to interact with the physical environment. The major instances include the Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), underwater autonomous vehicles, etc. Whereas the stationary application includes the non-robotic and digitally embedded AI system with advanced decision-making and analytical functions. Such as the integration of AI in early warning and radar systems, Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) architectures, enhanced Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) platforms, and selected components of nuclear command and control systems.[2]
