“Our world is more complex today than ever before…”
With these words, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif opened one of the most significant addresses Pakistan has delivered at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in recent years. His remarks at the 80th UNGA repositioned Pakistan not merely as a regional power but also as a principled voice for peace in these turbulent times. He chose this moment to outline how Pakistan interprets global dynamics, and how it sees itself contributing to peace while safeguarding its sovereignty and vital national interests.
The address came against the backdrop of a volatile security environment around the world, raging wars in different places, unprovoked Indian aggression in South Asia, the protracted humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, externally sponsored terrorism, hate-driven ideologies and the climate crisis. Throughout the address, he carefully balanced firmness with outreach, reminding the world that Pakistan is prepared to defend its rights but equally willing to pursue reconciliation.
