Quantum technologies harness the counterintuitive laws of quantum physics (superposition and entanglement) to create new computing, sensing, and communication capabilities. In defense, quantum computing uses qubits (quantum bits) to process information in fundamentally new ways, potentially solving complex problems much faster than classical computers. Quantum sensing exploits quantum effects to make ultra-precise detectors (e.g., gravimeters or magnetometers). In contrast, quantum communication (notably Quantum Key Distribution, QKD) utilizes entangled particles to establish links that are, in principle, immune to eavesdropping.[1][2] “Quantum innovation offers major advantages for defense and security but also poses significant risks if adversaries achieve a technological edge.” Policymakers must grasp this new domain now, as states worldwide are racing to develop quantum systems, with no regulation yet in place, and the consequences could destabilize existing deterrence structures.[3] The three most critical in military applications are in the computing, sensing, and communication fields, each coming with strategic implications.
