The Middle East is undergoing one of the most significant strategic transformations in decades. While many of these changes initially unfolded gradually and almost imperceptibly, recent developments have accelerated and exposed deeper shifts that were already underway. The region has now reached a strategic inflection point – ‘a watershed moment’ making it increasingly unlikely that it will return to the pre-October 2023 status quo. Whether this transition ultimately produces a more stable regional order or a more fragmented and conflict-prone environment will largely depend on the choices made by regional actors themselves.
Today’s regional security environment is shaped by several interconnected developments. These include Israel’s aggressive and expansionist policies tantamount to war crimes across the region in what is known as the ‘Greater Israel’ project across Gaza, Lebanon, Yemen and Iran; shifting alliance structures; the rise of middle powers; growing strategic autonomy among regional states; increased engagement with Iran; renewed emphasis on regional diplomacy ; and the gradual emergence of a more regionally driven security architecture.
