Introduction
The Middle East is undergoing one of its most significant geopolitical transformations in decades. The Gaza conflict, the evolution of Iran-Arab relations, a resurgence of great power rivalry, and a new approach by the United States to the region have all been a major factor in the reconfiguration of regional politics. In this changing arena, Iraq has become a state of strategic value whose political stability and policies have become more important in the balancing of power in the region[1]. Iraq has traditionally been viewed as a country affected by conflict and instability , but now it is becoming a player in the diplomatic arena and an economic player that can draw in other agendas in the region and the international arena.
The diplomatic developments in recent weeks have also highlighted the importance of Iraq as a player in the Middle East. In July 2026, Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi visited the United States and highlighted a need to strengthen the cooperation between both countries beyond security issues to include energy, trade and investment.[2] The visit was seen as an attempt to forge a long-term strategic economic partnership, a move Baghdad regards as an attempt to catch foreign investors and enhance the country’s presence in the economic development of the region, Iraqi officials said.
