Ambassador Redwan Hussein Rameto, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ethiopia

The Centre for Afghanistan, Middle East & Africa (CAMEA) at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) held an In-House meeting on February 21, 2022 with Ambassador Redwan Hussein Rameto, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ethiopia.  Other members of the delegation included Mr. Hayder Abdella Hassen and Mr. Molalign Asfaw Ayana.  The meeting was attended by Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry, Director General ISSI, Ms. Amina Khan, Director CAMEA and the Directors of the Centers of excellence at the ISSI.

Ambassador Aizaz Ahmed Chaudhry gave a presentation on the overall working of the Institute. He also talked about Pakistan’s engagement with Africa and highlighted how the present government’s ‘Engage Africa Policy’ is a priority. Pakistan is keen to develop economic and trade ties with Africa  though at the moment Pakistan’s trade with Ethiopia is very low,  however there is a lot of potential which we need to tap in, he said. He also talked about academic and institutional collaboration with African think tanks and academia at large.

Ambassador Redwan Hussein Rameto was of the view that Ethiopia is keen to open its Embassy in Pakistan which will help in enhancing and strengthening Ethiopian-Pakistan ties. He was of the view that trade is not being treated as it was supposed to be. It has been limited, but both Pakistan and Ethiopia have the potential to increase it manifold. Given the items being exported and imported there is a lot of potential for trade-We are undergoing reform in Ethiopia at the moment and are looking forward to engaging with the world and more specifically with Pakistan, he said.
