ISSI-NIDS Roundtable

The China Pakistan Study Centre at the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad (ISSI) organized a Roundtable discussion with a delegation from National Institute of Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan on June 3, 2022. The roundtable session was moderated by Director CPSC, Dr. Talat Shabbir.

The subjects of discussion during the roundtable included Japan’s national security environment and its policy, Pakistan’s national security policy in light of the recent expanded framework of security, Japanese and Pakistani perspectives on Russia-Ukraine conflict and Japanese and Pakistani perspectives on situation in Afghanistan. Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director China Pakistan Study Centre briefed the Japanese delegation on ISSI, its organizational structure and working.

The participants from ISSI included, Dr. Talat Shabbir, Director China Pakistan Study Centre, Mr. Malik Qasim Mustafa, Director Arms Control and Disarmament Centre, Ms. Amina Khan, Director Centre for Afghanistan, Middle-East & Africa and Dr. Neelum Nigar , Director Centre for Strategic Perspectives. While the participants from National Institute of Defense Studies (NIDS), Japan included, Colonel Yuka Nakazato, Colonel Kensuke Fujihata, Captain Tomoakai Kato, Commander Yoshitaka Hirano, Ms. Ochi Kasumi, Captain Shogo Yamauchi, Colonel Satoshi Masaka, Colonel Ryohei Saito, Mr. Hidenori Miyazawa, Mr. Tomoaki Yoshida and Mr. Eijli Takagi.

Growing significance of emerging technologies, self-defence activities of Japan, balance of power, counter-terrorism, evolving situation in Afghanistan, rising inflation in Pakistan, Japanese assistance to Ukraine and Pakistan’s bilateral relations with Russia and Ukraine were some of the key issues discussed.  The roundtable was helpful in bringing together diverse viewpoints and insightful perspectives from Japan and Pakistan.
